Future of Web Design

It is time to talk about the road ahead for the web design world in the coming years. Most of the time, trends just come and go. Some of them just hang around for a little bit of time. This is the case of the splash page. However, trends are a necessity in the grow and development of any craft. Some of the trends spawn other trends once they are born and improved upon. It is important for a designer to expand upon those custom web design trends trends and make them his/her own.

Many times, the shift from trend to trend is subtle year after year. However, you might recognize some of these trends today. I think that must of the trends below will become more important this year.

Responsive design. Responsive web design will become what we expect it to be in the future. We will stop talking about it due to this situation. However, it is very difficult for it to happen this year. Most web designers do not have a clue about what responsive web design is. The year 2012 is the year of the responsive web design. The reason is that the number of mobile devices is increasing every single year. More and more designers will switch to use fluid layouts. They will also use more media queries in their stylesheets. This way, more mobile websites will be seen in different devices and size screens.

Fixed-position Navigation. Many of us have run into this technique in blogs or personal websites. We have seen an increase in the use of these technique the last months too. However, in 2010-2011 this trend appeared to be dropping a little bit. You just need to add some links to your website if it does not have a main navigation. The performance of a website will be increased if you keep these links visible to your visitors all the time.

Oftentimes I wonder, is the future of web designers extinction or evolution? Extinction is probably a harsh word. After all, we don't put web designers in the same boat with accident attorneys, IRS collection employees or oil and pharmaceutical executives. Evolution is really a better term for web designers, as in they'll likely need to evolve to stay afloat. I say this because their services are similar to others that are destined to be obsolete in the near future, like video rental warehouses and brick and mortar bookstores.

The future of web design is about moving beyond designing for one device. Is it all about mobile? No. But mobile is incredibly important. Users are accessing the web from mobile smartphones, tablets, their laptops and desktop computers. The web is not a fixed width and a website needs to respond and adapt to these different platforms in a fluid and effective way. The Web is our only true, universal platform, and its future is in the hands of our world’s designers. They are the humans who will be shaping and crafting and tinkering and toying and pulling and pushing it in an infinite number of directions.
